The first gathering of Indigenous LGBTQ people was held in Minneapolis, MN, in the summer of 1988. Subsequent gatherings continue to be held outside of urban centres and are alcohol and drug-free events. The gathering was formally called the Annual International Two-Spirit Gathering in 1994. Regional Indigenous LGBTQ/Two-Spirit groups host the gathering in their traditional territory to share the unique aspects of their cultures, geography, and ceremonies.
